Quick Skills: Found Metals and Mixed Media

Found Metals and Mixed Media

THIS CLASS IS NOT CURRENTLY OFFERED DUE TO COVID-19
Have you ever been to a junk yard or yard sale and found a piece of metal that you wanted to use for a sculpture or design but didn’t know where to begin? Maybe it was a bunch of old chains, or rusty gears and pulleys. Maybe it was covered in paint and you didn’t know how to go about prepping it.
In this class students will learn tricks to identifying different types of metals, and how to degrease and remove rust and galvanized coatings. Students will also learn different techniques and applications to safely use those pieces of found metals either in a cold application such as riveting or wire wrapping…or hot applications such as brazing and welding.

Students are expected to bring in a few different found metals to class and we will as a group talk about the options of application.

This is a great class for those artists out there who have been collecting “junk” (valuable artifacts ;)) and want to finally give those pieces new life. Or non-artist types who are just curious about some tricks on identifying metals and hot and cold applications.

This class will be part lecture and demonstration, as well as hands on practice in the different applications, covering things like riveting, tap and die, brazing, wire-wrapping, removing coatings, etc.  It will cover welding as it relates, but this is not a full-on welding class (we’ve got whole ‘nother classes for that) so we’re going to spend most of the time on other ways to connect metals to other things.

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this class.  18 or older (or permission of the instructor)
