Intermediate MIG: Make Furniture

Intermediate MIG: Make Furniture

THIS CLASS IS NOT CURRENTLY OFFERED DUE TO COVID-19

Come to MMW and start building a dining room table, a outdoor patio set, a bookshelf, or whatever that thing is that your place has been wanting, nay, demanding!

This class will cover the basics of designing, jigging, and constructing welded steel furniture. For the first two weeks, we’ll practice techniques by building something for the shop, learning how to use the horizontal bandsaw, cut miters, use the drill press, how to keep everything nice and square while welding, and going through your design for your own project, picking out materials and preparing a cut list. The next four weeks will be spent working on your own personal project, be it your very own bench, coffee table, or table table. Most people get it done in the four weeks, but more complicated projects may require you to supplement the class with time in open shop (not included in class fee).

Notes on Possible Projects: This class is best suited for boxy kinds of projects: bookshelves, tables, benches, even chairs.  Doing curvy bendy stuff looks awesome, but it’s actually quite difficult and time consuming.  So we’re happy to show you that either in a private lesson or in our bending/rolling classes (link) but afraid it’s not really feasible in this furniture class.

Class Details: 6 session class.  Coming in Jan 2019, we’ll have two sessions of this class, one Mon-Fri, Jan 7-11, 9am-12:30pm, and one session Thurs nights for six Thursdays in a row starting Jan 17 (7-10pm).  Instruction fee is $180, consumables and shop fee is $245 (Total: $425)  Class price does not include material for your project (so you can make it however big or small you’d like). Six students max.  Note about wait lists.

Prerequisites: Must have taken Intro MIG to cover MIG welding and grinding technique.  Standard clothing.  18 or older or instructor permission.

Refund/Rescheduling Policy:  We hope you can make the class, but things happen.  If you need to cancel, we can refund your money 7 days ahead of the start of the class (minus a $25 registration fee).  You can reschedule the class 7 days before the start of the class as well.  There are no refunds or rescheduling within 7 days.  By not budgeting for missed classes, we can keep the prices as low as possible for everyone.

For six week classes, the first two classes cover the most critical material.  If you miss one of those, we’ll need you to make it up with a private lesson before continuing on with the class (at a discounted rate of $45/hr).  After the first two, you can make up one class for free during open shop hours when it’s slower (so not Weds or Saturdays).  After that, regular open shop rates apply.  There are no refunds after the first class of a multi-session class.
